The Case For The LBD: The Little Brown Dress

Updated: Sep 8, 2023

Now we've heard over and over why every woman should own an LBD which may be true because just one little black dress can be worn for any occasion, and it can be dressed up or down. Even I have stated that every woman needs a little black dress and I do believe they do. However, most people don't look good in black. Black is a very high contrast color and it's considered cool toned. I won't get into all the details of cool toned and warm toned colors now and what you should wear because that deserves its own article. Stay tuned for that one because it is an eye opener, and it will change your view on colors and clothing. With that, I want to show anyone that if you can wear brown you should embrace it and challenge yourself to find a little brown dress that can be dressed up or down.

Brown has so many shades different shades and once you get into incorporating more colors into your wardrobe, you'll notice a difference. Not only in your wardrobe but your overall mindset and how you look at clothes. In my opinion the perfect dress for any woman of any body shape is the wrap dress. It creates a waistline where there is no waistline, it conceals problem areas, and most importantly the easiest dress to just slip on at any moment.

Imagine you've been invited to an event or to a dinner and you don't know what to wear. You look through your closet and see the same little black dress you always gravitate towards, but you want something different. A little brown dress is perfect, it's different and, it's easy to wear and you can dress up or down. Now picture, a little brown wrap dress you'll look great and feel great because of the shape of the dress and the shape the dress gives you. You can fun with the makeup and your accessories, and you'll probably stand out from anyone else who chose to play it boring (I mean "safe"). For a monochromatic look wear the dress with different shades of brown and you'll stand out and get so many compliments.

For some crazy reason people believe (most of them not actual stylist by the way) that you can't mix black and brown. Well guess what? They're wrong and you most definitely can, and you should. It's all how you pair the colors, style the outfit, and your overall grace when you wear your clothes. I'll get into grace in a little bit. Find your perfect shade of brown and pair it with black and you'll see just how lovely the combination looks. Personally, my favorite combination of black and brown, is black and camel. It's such a radiant combination and perfect for fall and winter. Other combinations are yellow and brown, navy, and brown, blue, and brown, gray, and brown, orange, and brown, pink, and brown (YES PINK AND BROWN), green and brown, red, and brown.

Different shades of brown outfit.

There are so many different shades of these colors, so I'll be more specific. Olive green and camel they look beautiful balance each other perfectly. Chocolate brown and rust, cinnamon brown and powder blue, chocolate brown and pink salmon, brown and ivory, and so much more. One thing to keep in mind when wearing colors that are seen as "they don't match" is that they don't have to match they just have to go and flow well together. Just be open to the idea of pairing colors together that you would have never thought to before and your wardrobe will improve.

Going back to having grace when you wear clothes, one thing I emphasize with clients is grace, the clothes don't make you, you make the clothes. Stand up straight, shoulders back, and pick up your feet when you walk. I see so many people especially women walking with slump shoulders and dragging their feet as if they were never told put your shoulders back and pick up your feet. Women need to gain back the natural femininity that so many have lost. Even at the workplace absolutely no dignity, which is I named my business Style and Dignity. You need to have dignity in life and in your wardrobe. Whether you want to admit it or not your wardrobe reflects who you are and what values you're bringing into the world. More on that topic at a different time. Remember stay feminine!
