I know many of us love the style and fashion of decades past. The styles were just so classy, modest (for the most part), glamorous, and depending on what they were wearing it seemed so effortless. Even the fashion of the everyday woman was so effortless and glamorous. Since fashion now just doesn't have the same flare as before, it's no wonder why many women long for fashion from decades ago.
However, I’ve seen many women dress up women from the 1950’s, which is great I love that era of fashion and style, but it can come off very costume like. The purpose of this post is to give a step-by-step guide on how to dress retro or vintage without looking like you’re dressed in a costume.

Makeup
When doing your makeup to achieve the vintage look try not to go overboard. What I mean by that is don’t put on too much makeup. Makeup is supposed to enhance your features. It is not meant for you to wear as a mask and alter your face which is false advertisement. You don’t have to look like an exact replica of the women from the past, just look like yourself with their techniques.

Hair
You don’t have to dye your hair or have it been overly done. You can take a vintage hairstyle and modernize it by leaving your length and haircut. For instance, the traditional haircut that worked for most hairstyles at the time was a “middy.” You don’t have to get that haircut to achieve a vintage hairstyle. You can even do your hair the way you normally would, and the look will balance out perfectly. However, for me I would prefer a vintage hairstyle but I also love having long hair so I would style my long hair in vintage hairstyles that are perfect for long hair.

Accessories
You can always mix and match the accessories with your clothing. You can mix modern accessories with vintage or retro clothing. You can also mix classic accessories with classic vintage style it all depends on how you wear them and carry yourself. Some might say, "to lose the petticoat" but I wouldn't I like the effect the petticoat gives. However, for work I would leave the petticoat at home.

Shoes
In my opinion the best shoes for the vintage look are classic heels. Not the over exaggerated six-inch heels but the classic heels that you can wear all day and be comfortable.

None of these points are to dissuade you from dressing like a 1950s, 1940s, or a 1960s woman but it’s to help you with on how to dress like them without looking like you’re playing dress up. Personally, I love fashion from decades past, and I would love to dress like this every day. However, it takes time and patience to develop a wardrobe for this style. I also want to show women that you can look classy and in modern times while the rest of the world is trying to tell you different.
